ROISIN MURPHY 9PM
Songwriter Roisin Murphy moved to Manchester when she was twelve years old and imbibed the city’s musical heritage before going on to indulge in records from the likes of Sonic Youth, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Spaceman 3, Dinosaur Jr., and My Bloody Valentine. After also taking in the likes of The Stooges and The Velvets, she began going to the dub and reggae clubs in Moss Side. This melting-pot of sound proved the catalyst for what would eventually become a twenty year career.
From 1995 to the year 2000 Moloko steadily became more and more established. The huge success of ‘Sing It Back’ brought them to much larger stages around the world and also put new pressures on the duo. Roisin broke up romantically with partner Mark Brydon, and after making one last record together the decided to call it a day.
Next up producer Matthew Herbert began to work with Roisin. The duo quickly progressed with songs flowing in just a few months and an album soon followed before it was off to EMI for a pop record. The album ‘Overpowered’ was tightly controlled by Roisin, ensuring the record was a success and extensive touring followed.
New album ‘Hairless Toys’ came from a five week writing session with Eddie Stevens, the musical director of all Roisin’s work since 1997. The album looks set to be one of her best yet. It’s not a pop record, but it once again shows she can’t be categorised.
