INDEPENDENT VENUE WEEK 2026: In Conversation with Phoebe Green

Published Category Spotlight

At Albert Hall, we're consistently hosting new intake of emerging talent. However, this talent doesn't just appear out of nowhere: it grows. Nurtured and cared for by independent, grassroots venues in towns across the country

As we journey through Manchester’s grassroots scene in celebration of this year’s Independent Venue Week, we’re speaking to the North West’s own Phoebe Green! From the infamous Ruby Lounge to the iconic AO Arena, she’s been able to perform on just about every stage the region has to offer.

Which Manchester venues have you performed in so far and how has this journey been for you?

“The Wonder Inn, Gullivers, AATMA, Jimmy’s, The Ruby Lounge, SOUP, Night & Day, YES, Deaf Institute, Band On The Wall, various o2 venues, Albert Hall, New Century Hall, Victoria Warehouse, AO Arena … I think that’s all of them! I’ve been performing since I was at uni so it’s been a good 8 years of adding as many Manchester venues to the list as possible.”

What’s your favourite local venue either to perform or attend?

“I love YES as a venue because I live nearby and it will always have a place in my heart for nostalgic reasons, gigs at Albert Hall are always beautiful and I do appreciate the option to sit down, we played New Century Hall a few months ago and the team there are so accommodating, the sound there is great, it’s too hard to pick just one!”

Why are grassroots venues so important?

“I think it’s essential that musicians at any point in there career have somewhere they can perform and build community, grassroots venues are where I’ve met most of my friends and have connected with other musicians or music fans over a pint after a gig. If the only venues that exist are massive ones that only a tiny percentage of musicians can fill, the community building aspect and the opportunity to work up to bigger venues is lost – the best gigs I have attended have been at midsize grassroots venues as they offer a more diverse line up and the intimacy between artist and fan is still very much there.”

Independent Venue Week 2026 is from January 26th to February 1st, with gigs put across the region and beyond.
