WU LYF (pronounced “Woo Life”, stands for “World Unite! Lucifer Youth Foundation”) are a band from Manchester that is best known for creating a mystery about themselves. Formed in 2008, they initially gained attention for maintaining a mysterious image by remaining unknown and releasing limited information to the press, thus garnering a cult-like status and cultivating a worldwide community. During their first period of activity, they released one studio album, Go Tell Fire to the Mountain and decided to call it quits after frontman Ellery Roberts told the world – and his bandmates – that he was “gone” and “feeling empty” via a message online. Their final gigs followed, where they told their audience, “Goodbye forever”. A total loss to their legion of acclaimed fans.

Roberts went on to form Lost Under Heaven, bassist McClung went solo as Francis Lung plus joined with drummer Joe Manning and guitarist Evans Kati to make music under the name Los Porcos, along with three members of the band FAMY.

Chance rehearsals and reunions led them to naturally reform in 2025 with a phenomenally received tour of dates. Similar to their previous iteration, you won’t find them on streaming platforms and amongst corporate jargon, lining the pockets of the powers that be. Their material is only available via their newly-designed website and communal space worldunite.org, which features an archive of journals and works, early access to tickets, exclusive merch, fan forums and more, as they shun the likes of Spotify to build on the community they built before their split. They’ve removed their back catalogue from the service, and even went as far as to troll users with a Homer Simpson-sung version of recent single ‘The Fool‘ that directed them to Wu Lyf’s own hub.

Their statement about the passing and movement of WU LYF:

WU LYF WAS ALWAYS BETTER LEFT UNSPOKEN,
EXPERIENCED RATHER THAN DISCUSSED. WORDS KILLED IT.
YOU JUST HAD TO FEEL IT.
FIFTEEN YEARS AFTER THE FIRE BURNT OUT,
LIFE HAD PULLED US APART.
WE ALL HAD WALKED OUR SEPARATE PATHS
TRYING TO ESCAPE THE SHADOW
CAST BY THE BRIEF SPECTACLE
OF OUR YOUTH.
THEN SOMETHING BROKE.
OR HEALED.
WE SET UP CAMP IN THE LOFT OF A FRIEND’S BOOK SHOP
BEHIND UNFAMILIAR INSTRUMENTS,
EMOTIONS, AND WE BEGAN TO PLAY,
TENTATIVE AT FIRST
BUT WITH OPEN HEARTS & MINDS,
SEEKING NEW FORMS
UNCHAINED FROM WHAT HAD BEEN BEFORE.
OLD FRIENDS WITH FAMILIAR TREE BY ITS FRUITS.
OUR HANDS KNOW WHAT OUR MINDS FORGOT.
THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WAS ALWAYS THERE,
WAITING FOR US TO REMEMBER.

NEW SCARS, TRYING NOT TO
AGGRAVATE THE WOUNDS OF YESTERDAY.
WE ARE ALL SURPRISED BY
THE BIG MUSIC THAT STILL
PLAYS ITSELF THROUGH US,
AN UNEXPECTED GIFT
AFTER THE LONGEST EXILE,
A GLEAMING FRAGMENT OF THEN,
MAGNIFIED BY WHO WE ARE NOW.
RAW AND ECSTATIC,
THE FIRE TRANSFIGURED.
WHAT IT WILL BECOME
WE DO NOT KNOW.
YOU DO NOT DIG UP THE SEED
TO SEE IF IT GROWS.
YOU WAIT. YOU TRUST.
YOU KNOW THE TREE BY ITS FRUITS.
