With decades of legacy under their belt from time spent playing in and around manchester's live music scene, the durutti column as an influencial a band as they come. Having directly inspired the likes of Harry Styles, their music continues to make waves, which is why Keir Stewart, Bruce Mitchell, Sam Morris, Caoilfhionn Rose and Liz Rossi have put together a show that celebrates just that.

Since forming in 1978 in the suburbs of Manchester, The Durutti Column have released 21 projects and continually had some sort of creative output. That’s thanks to the resilient spirit of one man, Vini Reilley, who has fronted the band since it’s formation.

The band was the inaugural signing to Factory Records, with an ever-changing structure streamlined around Vini but immense success as audiences fell in love with their ethereal, guitar-driven sound

Almost 50 years on from their formation, several long-time collaborators have joined forces to put together For Vini, a show that celebrates the music of The Durutti Column – one of the most influencial bands to come out of Manchester – and the ongoing legacy of a true mancunian legend.

After a run of SOLD OUT shows at London’s Southbank Centre this Summer, the show finally heads up North with a show at our venue on the 19th of November. Ahead of the show, we caught up with Bruce Mitchell and Keir Stewart to understand the construction of the show a little better…

When curating the setlist, how do you choose from such a remarkable, six-decade spanning discography?

It’s an aim to choose songs that are strong, hang together nicely and represent an even cover of the Durutti Column’s output since 1978. We also have to work within the boundaries of what we know works well from previous performances with songs that have been tried and tested. To some extent, the songs are assigned to match the strengths of the musicians joining us for the show, while staying true to the Durutti Column’s sound and Vini’s intention.

How much would you say the landscape of Manchester’s live music scene has changed in your time?

Radical changes every 9-10 years with each generation of music listeners. New talent boiling up all the time, energy, attitude, young talent that’s just unpacked their instruments and are firing up their stuff at the audience whether they want it or not. So it goes and we don’t mind.

What fuelled you to bring this show up North?

We wanted to repeat the For Vini concert at Manchester’s Albert Hall, probably because it’s the best venue in the United Kingdom! And, of course, Vini’s hometown. It’ll be special.

This show on Thursday the 19th of November is set to be the amalgamation of nearly five decades of culture, love, music, people, and most importantly – a Mancunian legend.
