Sonically synonymous with our city, Cabaret Voltaire head to Manchester for the last time this October
Almost 50 years since they performed in Manchester for the very first time, the group, fronted by original members Chris Watson and Stephen Mallinder, close out Cabaret Voltaire’s love affair with Manchester here at Albert Hall. The electronic music innovators have a wide-spanning career closely linked to our city, as part of the Hacienda/Factory Records era and beyond…
Originally active between 1973 and 1994, Cabaret Voltaire featured Chris Watson until 1981 and Stephen Mallinder until 1994. The group were inactive for 20 years until (with Richard H Kirk as the sole remaining member) the 2014 performance at Berlin’s Atonal festival. An interconnected series of releases – Shadow of Fear, BN9Drone, and Dekadrone – followed in 2020 and 2021 before Kirk’s untimely passing in autumn 2021. Mallinder and Watson then decided to honour their sadly departed friend with this final tour and have stated that there will be no new recordings under the name Cabaret Voltaire.
Talking about this final tour, Stephen Mallinder says: “What a wonderful opportunity to go round the block one more time and share that with one of the most unique and spectacular artists we know. The connective tissue between ourselves, our history, and the world that Gazelle Twin now conjures up will be out there and shared with people. It seems like a special, magical moment.”
