There are few artists that can say they’ve truly stood the test of time, and not only survived - but come out the other side thriving. But that’s something that Kuniva and Swift - original members of The Dirty Dozen - can say with ease.

After almost three decades in the game and many years spent out of the spotlight, the industry giants have announced a brand new LP – D12 Forever – which promises to be a return to the musical genius the band have released thus far. Their return to the studio was welcomed by hip-hop fans around the globe, with hype quickly building on social media. In support of this and in celebration of their acclaimed debut album ‘ Devil’s Night’, the titans of Detroit are heading across the pond with some very special friends for three ultra exclusive and set-to-be-legendary anniversary performances, including their only Northern date of the year here at Albert Hall.

Bringing along with them Queens’ finest duo Mobb Deep, known around-the-world for their legendary contribution to East Coast Hip Hip throughout the 90s and 00s, the show is expected to be nothing but pure heat. In preparation for the show, we spoke to the legendary duo, diving deeper into what the show means to them and why now is the right time for the legendary band to come back.

Ahead of the show, we spoke to Kuniva and Swift to get an insight to what fans can expect from their forthcoming album, and the energy that they’ll be bringing to their show in Manchester.

Having been in the game for almost three decades, what keeps that fire burning and keeps you in the studio?

Kuniva: To have a picture in my head and to create the words to have it expressed in a musical form is always fulfilling to me. It drives me to want to create more. But ultimately, it’s my love for the music and the culture that helped save my life that keeps me going.

Swift: I believe the passion for creating music is something I was born with, so I will forever have that fire burning in me.

What does the release of your new LP ‘D12 Forever’ represent for you?

Kuniva: It represents longevity, strength, resilience, brotherhood, and legacy.

Swifty: It represents perseverance and triumph.

What sort of energy will you be bringing to the stage?

Kuniva: Positive, high energy, nothing less. Performing has grown to be one of my biggest passions in music, which is weird because I used to be terrified performing in front of people in the first few years of my career. Now I’ve learned to channel that fear and turn it into calmness and control while performing. Now it’s just a really fun thing I enjoy doing.

Swift: The type of energy that will have fans talking about how nostalgic the vibe was and how hoarse and exhausted they were from screaming and moving the whole night.

Any tease as to what we can expect on the setlist?

Kuniva: I’ll just say expect it to be very live and versatile. There’s always something crazy going on during our show, so you’d have to be there to understand what I’m saying.

Swift: Nope, sorry lol—the element of surprise. It’s always a vibe.

What’s the energy going to be like in rehearsals? Any pre-show rituals?

Kuniva: Rehearsals are always a creative pool, so it’s more thinking and brainstorming for the best ideas performance wise. We know the energy will be there for our show, but we have to execute the proper visuals, be it the stage setup, lighting during certain parts of the show, and making sure we keep the crowd entertained and included in the performance. We usually pray before each show as well.

Swift: Nope, just making sure that there’s never a dull moment.

You’ve been to Manchester a handful of times over the years, any standout memories, or what does the city mean to you?

Kuniva: It means a lot to us. The city is just so alive! They appreciate the culture and the music. They show up with such a cool but wild vibe that you can’t help but want to give them your best. They’ve always shown D12 love, so we never want to disappoint them.

Swift: I love Manchester for the energy of the people, the food, it’s always tons of things to do and things to see and soak up. I’ve never ever had a boring moment being in Manchester.

What makes now the right time to come back?

Kuniva: I personally think the world’s been missing us! Lol. Nah, but besides that, I think a group like ours is always needed to keep the masses on their toes with some good humor and great lyricism. We’re from the Shady era, so we give them nostalgia they’ve been longing for. But overall, people should have great music and entertainment, but also good quality. That’s what’s been missing, so it’s the perfect time for us.

Swift: Now is the right time to come back, just as every visit is the right time, because we’ve always been blessed to have genuine supporters there welcoming us with open arms.

From New York to Manchester, what’s one thing that you always get up to in each city?

Kuniva: Yeah, you have the wrong group member here to answer that question lol. I usually stay in my room and chill. But I do come out every now and then to see a few sights when my wife makes me. She calls and says, “See the sights a little, you’ll be okay!” Lol. I’m more of an introverted person, so she helps me with that when needed. I take pics and videos and send them to her to check out. Pretty exciting rapper, right?

Swift: Waking up, sipping coffee while viewing the city from the balcony for 30–40 minutes, soaking it all in to gain inspiration. Then I get my day started by walking the city to see what I can enjoy and learn.
