Cabaret Voltaire: 50 Years Performing in Manchester

Published Category Spotlight

Sonically synonymous with our city, Cabaret Voltaire head to our venue for their final ever performance in Manchester. Having taken to the stage many-a-time for some legendary gigs at venues past and present, we're diving into the band's long-standing affiliation with the city.

Almost 50 years since they took to a Manchester stage for the first time over in Hulme at Tony Wilson’s original Factory, and 30 years since they took to the stage in Heaton Park for Cities In The Park, the pioneers of industrial funk are heading to our venue for a special headline show which will feature the full band, honoring the late Richard H Kirk.

Debuting in Sheffield in the early 70s, the band set out to make “music without musical instruments”, experimenting with tape loops and custom-built oscillators, truly testing the bounds of where music and technology intersect. Early demo tapes led to live performances, though their earlier stints on-stage were more art piece than concert.

The production of their own recording studio led the band to make a name for themselves, establishing their identity on Rough Trade Records. We’re diving into the timeline of how Manchester served the band throughout their career, and how this love affair will all wrap up this October…

Interactive timeline

1978

Cabaret Voltaire join the collective of bands congregating at The Factory in Hulme on Royce Road, ran by Factory Records

It seemed natural that the band would join the label themselves after appearing on their first-ever record pressing, the famous 1978 FAC-2 sampler with Baader Meinhof and Sex In Secret. However, they instead went with Rough Trade, but kept things cool with the guys and even released a single Yashar on their label in 1983

1980

The band draw to Manchester like moth to a flame, taking to the stage four times over the year at different venues lost to time De Ville’s, The Beach Club at Oozits, Rafters and New Osbourne Club!

1982 - 1990

The band performed at the Factory-owned Hacienda four times during this period, where they were found to be the perfect muse for the industrial spirit of the venue’s skeletal stage, with author Randall Roberts saying: “They looked less like a traditional band and more like audio-visual engineers in a lab”

1991

The band return for Cities in the Park, a historic two-day festival held at Heaton Park celebrating the ‘Madchester scene and honouring Factory producer Martin Hannett

1992

Things wrap up at the legendary NIA in Hulme, a 5 minute walk from where they began at The Factory.

2025
