WU LYF Reunite To Play Their Biggest Hometown Show To Date

Published Categories Reviews Spotlight

Since their explosion onto the underground alt-rock scene with their elusive persona and critically acclaimed debut, wu lyf have garnered a COMMUNITY of LIKE-MINDed people, who recently congregated here at Albert Hall, for a very exclusive show which saw the band run through both of their LPs in their entirety.

And after fourteen years away from the spotlight following their own individual callings, the Manchester-rooted four-piece crossed their paths once again and gave life to the band that defined an entire soundscape, once poised for world domination that cut itself short.

The band split at the call of Ellery Roberts, the band’s vocalist and front-man who we spoke to in an exclusive inerview in the build-up to the show, to understand the driving forces by this rekindling of spirits and why, exactly, things didn’t work out the first time. WU LYF split shortly after they won the 2011 Q Award for Best New Act, with Roberts offering:

“When WU LYF ended, we all had this sense of unfillfiled potential.

We all had desires to experience life, after having a strange experience of becoming quite popular at 19 and 20 years old. It was only an 18 month period and so much amazing stuff happened, but mental health burnout led us to lead these seperate lives.”

What brought WU LYF back together?

“There was a moment, with the new album, when we were making a book celebrating the anniversary of A Wave and there was this reconciliation with the past. That desire to see the potential we abandoned, where that might lead to… there was a lot of love in the room. Ity was very embryonic and experimental.”

How did it feel to perform with the band again?

“I kinda felt like it was kareoke at first, you know, doing the old songs. How do you re-embody something you made when over a decade ago? Now, it sounds different, I can’t sing the way I used to in certain ways and the whole band has a whole new, developed realm of capabilities. For better or for worse – that’s just growing. But the music has evolved with us and I think you can hear that.”

How do you think you would handle your Q Awards win nowadays?

“Damn, RIP The Q Awards. The younger generation will never know. Haha. It was a big deal, maaan. Look, it’s not that I dislike it, it’s just that I don’t really respect it – the established status quo. I don’t know how I’d feel now. I wish Q Magazine still existed though. There’s a void in the culture of good music journalism which is a shame as it helps people comprehend value in a world where people can be so easily manipulated in their sense of what’s valuable. Now, it’s much more about money to achieve influence rather than a meritocracy of passion, you know, there’s value in good critique. [Being able to say] – what are you trying to say here? What are you trying to achieve? I feel like Q understood the creative process that went into [performing].”

As Louder Than War UK said in their review of the show: This was more than a gig. It was a reaffirmation. The band were met to a rave response to the crowd of devoted fans, all eager for a glimpse at the band that defined many of their formative years, worshiping at their altar. This show was a testament to WU LYF, to passion, and to love. And we're so grateful to have hosted it here at albert hall!
